In Term 1 we ventured to Port Side Boulders to try some bouldering and alternate between bouldering one week and climbing the next. In Term 2 Rockface Indoor Climbing Centre will be closed for renovations and we will boulder all term.

Bouldering is a form of rock climbing on 5-meter-high climbing walls. “Problems” are climbed without ropes or harnesses with one person climbing at a time. There is no need for belayers so all participants are free participate in the sport in their at their own pace. Portside Boulders has over 100 problems available within the one bouldering area at any one time.

The students need to wear comfortable clothing (sport shorts or leggings and PE shirts are ideal), joggers and bring a water bottle. The bus will depart PLC from 10 View Street (outside the Maintenance building) at 3.35 pm and return by 6.00 pm.

Port Side Boulders requires a waiver form to be signed for each student. If you have not bouldered at Port Side Boulders before please go online to the link below, watch the video and complete the waiver.

Enrolments are closed, however late enrolments are available by contacting to join the waiting list.

Surfing (Years 7 – 12)

Day: Thursday (see dates below)
Dates: May 9, 16 and 23;  June 13, 20 and 27
3.30 pm – 6.00 pm
Venue: Leighton and Scarborough Beach
Cost:  $300

Our surfing lessons are run by Scarborough Beach Surf School who provide high quality surf coaches. Their coaches can coach any surfer, whether they are beginners, intermediate or advanced surfers. Surfboards and wetsuits are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own wetsuit if you have one.

Also worth nothing is the fact that PLC are developing a surf squad for the state championships in August. PLC entered its first ever team in 2016. In 2017 our team doubled in size and we were a very close 2nd, in the regional event. Both years we’ve had girls go through to the state finals and this year one of our teams came runners-up at the state final. While you don’t have to attend these sessions to be in the squad, it’s a great way to lift your skills and to bond with others who might be in your team.

Students should wear sun safe clothing, bathers, foot wear (thongs are fine) and bring a towel.

A bus will depart from 10 View Street (the car park south of the Science/Art building) at 3.35 pm. We will return to School by 6.00 pm. As a security precaution, school bags, laptops and other belongings will be left at PLC (locked in the building) rather than taken to the beach. This means students need to move efficiently after class finishes. There are change rooms at the beach so there is no need to get changed before departing PLC. If you wish to be picked up from Leighton or Scarborough Beach, please aim to be no later than 5.30 pm.

The surf school we contract to run our lesson requires a waiver form to be signed annually on behalf of all students. If you have not participated in surfing this year then you will need to return a signed surfing consent form to the Outdoor Education Department before the first surfing session of the term. Waiver forms can be found on the Co-curricular page of the Outdoor Education website:

Enrolments are closed, however places may become available at a later date so please contact to join the waiting list.
